Labour Parliamentary Candidate, Luke Murphy, Pledges Support for Basingstoke Makerspace’s Fight to Purchase Community Asset
Basingstoke, UK (May 23, 2024)
In a show of support for a beloved local institution, the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Basingstoke met with the users of the Basingstoke Makerspace today to learn about the community workshop’s facilities and its efforts to purchase its current home, Maritime House.
Luke Murphy, who is standing for election in the upcoming general election, toured the Makerspace and met with members and directors to discuss the importance of securing the future of the space. The Makerspace, which provides access to a wide range of tools and equipment for making, learning, and exploration, is seeking to raise funds to purchase Maritime House after being notified that the building is being sold.
“I was so impressed by the incredible array of resources available at the Basingstoke Makerspace, as well as the passion and creativity of its members,” said Luke Murphy.
“This is precisely the type of community asset that we need to protect and nurture. It plays a vital role in fostering innovation, skill-sharing, and hands-on education.”
The Makerspace has applied for a grant from the UK government’s Community Ownership Fund to assist in their efforts to purchase Maritime House. However, with a general election recently announced, there are concerns that the process may be delayed or disrupted. Luke has pledged to raise this issue with colleagues in Parliament and seek assurances that the Makerspace’s application will be given proper consideration, regardless of the election timeline.
“I will urge an incoming Labour Government to do what they can to ensure that the Makerspace’s application is processed in a timely and fair manner, and I will be committed to supporting community-driven initiatives like this one.”
Steve Hawtin, Chair of Basingstoke Makerspace, welcomed Luke Murphy’s support, stating, “We are grateful for the genuine interest Luke has shown in our cause and his proactivity and willingness to support our efforts. The Makerspace is a true community resource, and we hope all parties will recognise the importance of preserving groups like ours for the benefit of current and future generations.”
